More than 200 underground cities have been discovered in the Cappadocia region to date. Among these, the largest and most visited are the Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities.
Derinkuyu Underground City descends to a depth of about 85 meters and historically had the capacity to shelter 20,000 people.
These cities were fully equipped living spaces, complete with ventilation shafts, water wells, churches, stables, and even wine cellars. They were protected by massive stone doors that could be sealed from the inside against enemy attacks.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes during your visit and keeping in mind that some passages can be narrow and sloped. Kaymaklı has less steep, wider corridors than Derinkuyu, making it a better option for those who are claustrophobic.
